Media

This week I introduced a selection of advertising flyers (les depliants publicitaires) to the classroom at one of our centres. At the carpet I provoked a discussion about what flyers are for, why we need them (or don't!), and how the people who make them get us to pay attention to them. Among the children's many observations were that often toys for boys are advertised using "boy colours" while toys for girls appear surrounded by "girl colours". We discussed the fact that sometimes boys and girls play with any types of toys and that they often like a variety of colours too!
The students pointed out that in the food flyers, prices were shown in very large type. They enjoyed telling me that they could say the prices and currency in French. That was rewarding!!!
At the centres, one of the activities in which the children participated was to find one thing that they think they like, and one that they do not. Then they glued these items onto a chart and wrote their name beside it. Next week we're going to look at the data they gathered and decide if we can draw any conclusions from it. I also plan to talk about TV advertising with the students; to hear their opinions and perhaps open their minds to new ideas...
