| The concept of probability is challenging for young children. For the past two weeks, we've explored the nature of chance versus logic. For example, I asked the children "Will you see a spider today?". The resounding answer was "Definitely not!". When I asked them why, the response was "Because we don't like spiders!" This led to a debate on whether not liking something equates with not ever experiencing it. Then we discussed how we've all seen spiders in all sorts of places - so logically, it would appear that it would be quite possible that any one of us might see a spider at any time, and in almost any place (since a spider habitat is pretty much like a human habitat! - thank you JP). When asked again "Will you see a spider today?"; the revised response was a general "it's possible". Hoorah! |
